Locals Recommendation - Kauri Mountain Beach, is great for swimming, has nice rock pools and a stunning white sand beach.

It's a bit of a drive, just east of Whangārei Heads (adds to why's its not crowded) and there is a small staircase to get down to the beach itself. Access is via a farmers private property who also lets you park in his paddock. Due to nesting birds there are restrictions regarding dogs.

The beach is long and clean, with rocky nooks perfect for paddling, exploring or spotting sea life. It’s not on any big tourism map, and since there’s no carpark or toilets, the crowds mostly stay away. You'll feel like you have the ocean to yourself.
