💡 Tips from locals
Wear grippy shoes — rocks around the pool can be slippery
Always check water depth before jumping — especially in dry spells
Pack a picnic and your towel — there are no food options nearby
Go 5 mins up stream for a more private and secluded swim spot
Sunny weekends are busy - try go on a weekday
Turn this into a full-day trip by adding nearby forest walks like the Cookson Kauri Walk, Model Kauri Dam, Murray’s Walk or Moss Creek Track
This is only one of many swimming holes up and down the Kauaeranga River. Hoffman’s is more public, and well-known much like Shag Stream swimming hole opposite the DoC HQ and Swing Bridge at the beginning of the valley. But get chatting to a local while you’re swimming, and they might reveal another location further down the river worth checking out.
