We weren't expecting much when we came here but had time, so we thought to give a go.. and WOW we were blown away! What a cool place to explore.

Labyrinth Rocks near Takaka is a free limestone playground where winding paths, narrow tunnels, caves and rock corridors slowly unfold the deeper you wander in.

At the start, it can feel like you’re just walking past a few interesting rock formations — but don’t stop there. The real magic is further in, where the trails twist into a genuine maze of passageways that’s perfect for exploring, squeezing through, and getting a little (safely) lost. Many visitors turn back too early and miss some of the best sections, so take your time and keep going.

It is very easy to get lost here, so if you have kids - please keep them close to avoid getting separated.

Tips:

  • Free to visit (there is a donation box for the voluntaries)

  • The map at the entrance is very helpful (suggest to take a photo if they don't have map copies available)

  • Easy, flat walking but allow extra time for exploring

  • Toilets available at the entrance

  • If you are into these types of adventures, set aside 45-90 minutes to explore. Or just 15 minutes for a quick look - but it does get better the deeper you go into the labyrinth!

  • Great for curious kids, adventurous adults, and anyone who loves a bit of exploration

  • Look for the hidden toys that the volunteers put out!

Reviews:

'Absolutely underrated. My whole family loved it. Had a blast trying to find all the little hidden toys and passages. Spent at least 2 hours in the maze as we let the kids lead us with the map provided. It's definitely a must-see.' - Mandy, Google

'We stumbled upon this attraction by chance since our Airbnb was nearby, and it turned out to be an amazing find! It’s a naturally formed maze of pathways that feels like a hidden adventure. The original owner and the council have done a great job clearing the overgrowth and even added a treasure hunt to make exploring even more fun. I’d recommend bringing a map but only using it if you get lost—half the excitement is in navigating the maze yourself. Best of all, it’s completely free and open 24/7, making it a must-visit if you’re in the area!' - Bradlee, Google
