One of our favourite short hikes in the South Island for its unique and random perfectly hexagonal stones! We didn't get a view at all as you can see in our video, but it was still absolute epic and we can't wait to do it again next time we are near Dunedi.

The Organ Pipes Track is a must-see for those who appreciate unique geological formations. The journey begins with a steep but manageable walk through native bush, which soon opens up to reveal a massive outcrop of hexagonal basalt columns. The final approach involves a scramble up the fallen columns, a rewarding challenge that leads to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. approx 30-40 mins one way.

Getting there

The Organ Pipes Track can either be accessed via Mt Cargill Road with a small carpark found at the base of the track or from the Mt Cargill Walking Track for those wanting a more challenging walk.

Know before you go

Weather conditions on the Organ Pipes Track can change rapidly and it is recommended that you take a warm, windproof layer with you when walking this track. The Organ Pipes feature is very steep and tricky to climb and descend. Great care is required when climbing to the top of the Organ Pipes and it is strongly advised not to climb this feature in inadequate footwear or when it is wet. The “path” to the top of the Organ Pipes is littered with the smashed up remains of hundreds of fallen columns.

Reviews:

'A great short hike (walk) to some spectacular views. The beginning of the hike is fairly uphill but it evens out as you go. The pipes are very fun to climb on, but not the most stable as you go up the hill.' - Shayla, Google

'Parking very limited. Steep stairs up and even steeper rocks to climb. Wet, muddy and overgrown at places. Get good shoes for sure and some water. Perfect spot, short but challenging hike, however you are rewarded by perfect views and atmosphere.' - Tony, Google

'Very limited parking available. Maybe enough space for 4 cars. We were lucky enough to grab one. Hike to the organ pipes is very muddy but not too difficult. A decent elevation gain to start then levels out. Not really any views until you get to the rocks due to the canopy. But once there it is fun climbing the rocks and the view is good. Can continue onto Buttars and Mt Cargill if one chooses.' - Andrew, Google

'Very slippery when wet. Last part has loose rocks and is very steep. Going down is definitely challenging but fun as well' - Lucas, Alltrails
