🌿 A peaceful garden retreat in the Waikato countryside 🌿 Hidden Waterfall alert! 💦

Just 20 minutes from Te Kuiti, Aramatai Gardens is a serene 2.2-hectare woodland garden nestled in the rolling hills of the Waikato region. Originally established in 1992 by Stu and Trisha Donaldson, the garden is now lovingly maintained by Jill Mouat, who has reopened it for public enjoyment. There is an onsight Bed and Breakfast (with fantastic reviews), caravans/campers can park up or you can simply pop in to visit the gardens and secret waterfall. ($5 fee to visit)

The garden boasts a diverse array of plantings, including exotic and native trees, rhododendrons, camellias, roses, perennials, irises, and lilies. Two large natural ponds with water lilies, rock formations, and a waterfall enhance the tranquil atmosphere. Additional features include a vegetable garden, sunken garden, fruit and nut orchard, extensive lawns, and walkways.

Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the gardens for a modest fee of $5.00. Morning and afternoon teas, as well as lunches, are available by arrangement. For those seeking a bit more adventure, a 30-minute walk leads to a magnificent private hidden waterfall.

Aramatai Gardens also offers a charming bed and breakfast experience. The self-contained studio cottage features a queen bed, kitchenette, and garden views, providing a comfortable stay amidst nature. Guests can enjoy a continental breakfast and explore the surrounding farm and gardens at their leisure.

Visitor Reviews:

“Stunning scenery and very comfortable accommodation. The breakfast Jill provides is the best we've had in New Zealand. The gardens and private waterfall are exceptional.” — Mark, April 2025, Booking.com

"Jill should charge a lot more than she does. This place is absolutely magical. Beautiful, beautiful gardens, on a very picturesque farm with a fantastic short walk threw the farm (saying hi to the farm animals along the way) to a stunning waterfall. The breakfast provided is huge, as good as you’ll get anywhere, to many things to list, but the fresh eggs, real farm bacon and homemade brownies were so awesome." - Jason, May 2024, Google.
