This is a kiwi favourite for beaching and camping!
Bonus: There's twin cave at the end of first beach, accessible during low tide.
Elliot Bay was Privately owned up until 2021, the elderly owner would collect his $2 car park entry and you would be allowed here. Under threat of developers wanting to buy this land to create housing, a trust was created and $6,000 raised to purchase the land to turn it into a conservation mecca! Loads of 'great walks' will be here in the future. - It still costs $2 to access.
From reviewers:
'What a fantastic beach and basic camp ground. Parking for the beach is $2 per vehicle. Camping, at $25 per person is a bit steep given the very basic facilities - longdrop toilets & no showers .... but ... This is SUCH A FANTASTIC SPOT. The long beach has two sections, the end near the carpark is good for fishing and surfing, the other end is much calmer with rock pools and calm areas for wallowing or playing in. The campsite has a huge area of sites to choose from, all with great views. There is also a big barn with seating area, fridges and darts ... plenty of space for everyone if it rains. Book and pay on arrival at the managers house by the parking area.' -Fiona, Google Maps (April '25)
'Thank you for such a lovely stay we can’t wait sit to come back. Officially my favourite campground in the North Island. Thank you to the managers who are amazing thank you!' -Fran, Google Maps (April '25)
