🌾 Urban estuary sanctuary just a stone's throw from Auckland's suburbs

Hidden along Somerville Road in East Auckland, Mangemangeroa Reserve is a scenic mix of native bush, tidal estuary, boardwalks and farmland. Perfect for a peaceful walk, picnic with birdsong, or a bit of wildlife spotting—especially tūī, kererū, fantails and even the occasional kaka overhead.

📍 108 Somerville Road (multiple entry points from Sandspit Rd, Hayley Lane, Point View Drive)

📏 Track options:

  • 5 km estuary loop (Somerville → Shelly Park Beach, return): ~1–2 hours

  • 0.6 km Rotary Loop: ~20 min

  • 2.8 km Kowhai Path: ~1¼ hr
    💰 Free
🦮 Dog-friendly (on leash; keep off mudflats in bird breeding season)
🚻 Portaloo available at main carpark

Top Tips:

  • Best visited at low or high tide for different views

  • Bring good shoes – some sections can be muddy after rain

  • Birdwatchers: look out for tūī, kererū, pīwakawaka, and even the odd kākā overhead

  • Great for families, with flat paths and grassy picnic spots
