🌴 Wigmore's Waterfall (Papua Waterfall) – Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Wigmore's Waterfall, also known as Papua Waterfall, is the only publicly known waterfall in Rarotonga— though we’ve got a few hidden waterfalls marked on our map too 😉. Located on Rarotonga’s southern side, this spot is a slice of nature that can be stunning — but only under the right conditions. (Approx a 5 min drive from the main road)
🗺️ What to Know:
💧 Seasonal flow – Best viewed during the wet season (Feb–March) when there's been recent rain. In the dry season, the falls may dry up completely.
💲 Entry fee – There's a small locals’ tariff of about $2 NZD to access the road.
🦟 Mosquito alert – Bring bug spray! The area can be full of mosquitoes, especially after rainfall.
🛣 Access road – Expect a bumpy gravel road with lots of pot holes - the worst road on the island (and the only one you need to pay to access). Still worth the ride!
🥾 Hiking access – This is the start of the Cross Island Track (Te Rua Manga “The Needle”). A great loop option if you're keen on a solid hike and don't want to end up on the other side of the island.
🐶 Feel-good detour – The Rarotonga SPCA is located on the way. Visitors can volunteer and may get the chance to walk rescue dogs to the waterfall 🐾.
🌟 Tips & Tricks:
🕐 Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and get the softest lighting for photos.
🌧️ Check the weather forecast before making the trip – no recent rain = no waterfall.
🧴 Don’t forget: insect repellent, sunscreen, water, and good walking shoes.
📍 If you're doing the Cross Island Hike, this is a great start or end point depending on which direction you prefer (we recommend starting from the north and finishing at the waterfall for a refreshing dip — if there's water!).
🗣️ Reviews
"Came after two days of rain and the waterfall was really flowing! Absolutely worth the $2 fee. The area was peaceful and green, though the mosquitoes were no joke — bring repellent. If you're not into hiking, it’s still a quick stop with a nice view." – Google Review
"We did the Cross Island Track and ended our hike at Wigmore’s. Super refreshing to cool off by the falls — but if there hasn’t been rain recently, it’s not worth the detour. The road in is rough, so drive carefully if you’re on a scooter." – TripAdvisor
