🥈 Ginkaku-ji (The Silver Pavilion)
The Beauty of Simplicity
While the Golden Pavilion is about grandeur, Ginkaku-ji represents Wabi-sabi—the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and nature.
The Sand Sea: You’ll be greeted by the "Sea of Silver Sand," a massive, meticulously raked sand garden designed to reflect moonlight.
The View: Follow the trail up the hill behind the temple for a "gem" panoramic view of the pavilion nestled into the lush forest with Kyoto city stretching out behind it.
🌸 The Philosopher’s Path (Tetsugaku-no-michi)
A Walk Through the Sakura
Exiting the temple, you step directly onto the Philosopher's Path. This stone walkway follows a canal lined with hundreds of cherry trees.
The Experience: During Sakura season, you are walking through a tunnel of pink blossoms. It is one of the most peaceful and meditative walks in the city.
The "Hana-fubuki": If you catch a breeze, you’ll witness the "flower snow"—petals falling like snowflakes into the canal water.
🥢 Lunch on the Main Street: Imadegawa-dori
As you walk back from the Silver Pavilion toward the main road (Imadegawa-dori), the street is lined with charming, traditional eateries. This is the perfect place to refuel before heading to your next destination.
