Since our first visit to the Bluefield Tea Factory a few years ago, we've made it an annual tradition to stock up on tea right there in the factory.

Because it is here, that we've discovered our favourite strong, black tea (BLUEFIELD DUST Nr1) — a perfect match for enjoying with milk and sugar - the proper Sri Lankan way. ;-)

The Bluefield factory offers an informative tour that explains the tea-making process step by step. By the end, you'll have learned about the various tea varieties that can be produced from the same tea bushes and have the opportunity to taste them yourself during a tea tasting ceremony in the cafeteria.

After the tea tasting, you can visit the factory shop to purchase some tea. There's no pressure to buy; we found the tea so delightful that we ended up shopping anyway. However, we're aware that the factory tour guides earn a little extra if you do decide to purchase. So many indeed a good time to get some gifts for your loved ones at home.

BEST TIME TO GO: The factory is open all year round. However, the amount of tea leaves processed may vary depending on the time of year. Best ist morning hours or after 4pm since there are less people visiting.

DO try the cinnamon buns in the cafeteria—they're unmatched on the island.

DON'T take photos of the factory workers if you see a sign indicating that photography is not allowed. If you ask whether you can still take a photo, they may say "Yes, sure!" However, be aware that they might ask for money as soon as you took the picture. We suspect that the signs are put up to prevent this from happening.
