The Akranes Folk Museum is a fantastic place to explore the past of the Akranes region in Iceland. Located near the town's cemetery, this museum contains a variety of 19th and 20th century buildings, boats and artefacts collected from the area. Of special note is the 86-tonne ketch Sigurfari (Kútter Sigurfari), the only preserved ship of its kind in Iceland. Visitors can explore Garðaholt 3, an open-air museum consisting of houses, tools, costumes, furniture and part of a turf house, as well as the original Garðar house, a parsonage built in 1876. During the summer season, the museum is open every day from 10am-5pm, and it's possible to book guided tours outside of opening hours. Akranes Folk Museum is a must-see for history lovers visiting the region.
