Nykurhylsfoss (Sveinsstekksfoss or Fossárdafoss) is a hidden off-the-beaten track waterfall located in Fossárdalur on the Fossá River as it makes its way to Berufjörður in east Iceland. Despite its slightly hidden location, curious visitors still stop by this grand spectacle of nature no matter what time of day it is. The beauty of the waterfall lies not only in its two-tiered, fifteen to twenty-meter drop, but also in its deep folklore associated with the mythical creature Nykurhylur - a horse with backward hooves that will drown anyone brave enough to bravely take a ride on its back. With its stunning views across the fjord and easy accessibility, Nykurhylsfoss provides an exciting way to break up long drives through the Eastfjords!
