Gásir, or Gásakaupstaður, is a medieval trading post situated 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) north of Akureyri, in Northern Iceland. It was the major trading post in the area during the Middle Ages and is believed to be active until the 16th century. Today, Gásir is an Icelandic heritage site and the Akureyri Museum holds events at its location - most notably, the Medieval Days festival dedicated to learning experiences focusing on late Medieval Iceland. Archaeological digs have revealed that much of the culture and trading from centuries ago still exists today.
