Sightseeing

The Grosse Scheidegg is one of the most scenic mountain passes in the Bernese Alps, connecting Grindelwald with Meiringen. Surrounded by dramatic peaks like the Wetterhorn, it offers stunning views and a true sense of alpine solitude once you leave the crowds behind.

You can reach the pass easily by PostAuto from Grindelwald, which winds its way up through forests and alpine meadows, an experience in itself. From the top, countless trails lead off in every direction, whether you’re after an easy walk or a full-day hike.

Just below the pass, you’ll find small mountain lakes and a few lesser-known ponds scattered along the trail, perfect for reflections of the surrounding peaks on calm days. These are hidden gems that often go unnoticed by most visitors.

The views towards the Eiger, the Schreckhorn and the Rosenlaui Glacier are breathtaking, and the light here, especially in early morning or late afternoon, is incredible for photography.

My personal tip:
Take the first PostAuto in the morning to catch the soft light and calm atmosphere before the crowds arrive. Bring a picnic and spend time near the small lakes below the pass, if you’re lucky, you’ll get perfect reflections of the Wetterhorn in the still water.
