Oeschinensee is a stunning alpine lake nestled in the Swiss Alps, just a short distance from the charming town of Kandersteg. With its vibrant turquoise waters surrounded by towering mountains and lush greenery, it’s a picture-perfect spot that feels like something out of a postcard. Visitors often hike to the lake, taking in breathtaking views along the way, and once they arrive, they can enjoy activities like swimming, paddle boating, or simply soaking up the serene atmosphere. The area is also popular for its hiking trails, which cater to all levels, making it a great destination for both casual walkers and seasoned trekkers. Plus, there are cozy mountain restaurants nearby where folks can grab a bite while enjoying the spectacular scenery. Oeschinensee truly captures the essence of Switzerland's natural beauty.
My personal tip: My highlight in the area is the Heuberg Loop Trail, a moderately difficult (red-marked) mountain hike starting from the Oeschinensee cable car station. The trail is about 8.5 km long, takes 3 to 3.5 hours, and leads over Heuberg through the alpine pastures of Oberbergli and Unterbergli. It offers spectacular panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The trail is usually open from June to October, but caution is advised in May due to possible lingering avalanche snow.
