The Fortress of Acronauplia is the oldest fortified part of Nafplio, offering a fascinating journey through the city’s layered history. Built and expanded by the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, this sprawling complex of walls, bastions, and gates sits on a rocky hill above the Old Town. While less developed than Palamidi Fortress, its untamed pathways and partially ruined structures give it a more authentic, exploratory feel.

From its elevated vantage points, you can enjoy sweeping views over Nafplio’s red‑tiled rooftops, the Argolic Gulf, and the Bourtzi Castle, making it a favorite for photographers and history lovers alike. The site is free to enter, uncrowded compared to other landmarks, and perfect for a peaceful late‑afternoon stroll.

👉 Wear sturdy shoes and visit close to sunset—the fortress paths are uneven, but the golden‑hour views over Nafplio are unforgettable.
