La Ciotat is a working coastal town that offers a more relaxed and authentic alternative to nearby Cassis. Once a major shipbuilding center, it still shows traces of its industrial past, while shifting toward tourism, yachting, and seaside life.

The town is built around a lively harbor, with a historic old center rising above the quays and a long stretch of beaches extending northeast. Compared to other Riviera destinations, it feels less polished and more local, with affordable restaurants and a slower pace.

La Ciotat also holds an important place in film history. It was here that the Lumière brothers filmed some of the first moving images ever created, including the famous Arrival of a Train. The town is home to the Eden Théâtre, the oldest cinema in the world still in operation.

Beyond its cultural side, La Ciotat is a good base for exploring the coast, including the Corniche des Crêtes and nearby calanques.

👉 Local Tip: Walk along the old port in the early evening, then continue toward the beaches for sunset. It’s much quieter than Cassis and gives you a better sense of local life.
