Hospice de la Vieille Charité is one of the most beautiful buildings in Marseille, hidden within the streets of Le Panier. Built in the 17th century by architect Pierre Puget, it was originally designed as a hospice to house the poor and migrants arriving in the city.

Today, it has been fully restored and transformed into a cultural center, but its original structure remains striking. The building is arranged around a large rectangular courtyard lined with arcades in warm pink stone, all centered on an elegant Baroque chapel with an oval dome.

Inside, you’ll find two museums. The Musée d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne houses artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, and the wider Mediterranean, while the Musée des Arts Africains, Océaniens et Amérindiens presents collections from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Together, they reflect Marseille’s long history as a crossroads of cultures.

Even without visiting the exhibitions, the courtyard itself is worth the stop. It’s calm, architectural, and feels removed from the busy streets just outside.

👉 Local Tip: Come here for a quiet break while exploring Le Panier. The courtyard is one of the best places in the area to slow down, take photos, and escape the crowds.
