Calanque du Mugel
ParkBeach
Directions

Red cliffs, calm coves, and a lush park hidden behind the coastline create a completely different atmosphere from the classic white calanques. It feels more protected, greener, and easier to explore at your own pace.

Calanque du Mugel, located in La Ciotat within the Calanques National Park, stands out for its unusual ochre-colored rock known as poudingue, formed from ancient river stones compressed over millions of years. This gives the landscape a warmer tone compared to the typical limestone cliffs of Marseille and Cassis.

The site is divided into two small coves. The Petit Mugel is quieter and more intimate, while the Grand Mugel is larger, with easier access and a nearby restaurant. Both offer clear water and sheltered swimming conditions.

Behind the calanque, the Parc du Mugel adds another layer to the visit. This 17-hectare botanical park features shaded paths, rare Mediterranean and tropical plants, and a microclimate protected from the wind by the Bec de l’Aigle massif. A short but steep path leads to a belvedere 82 meters above the sea, with panoramic views over the coastline and Île Verte.

👉 Local Tip: Skip the first beach and walk deeper into the park toward Petit Mugel or the belvedere. Most visitors stop early, but the best views and quieter spots are further in.
