Sanary-sur-Mer is one of the most picturesque seaside towns on the Var coast, known for its colourful fishing harbour and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Often described as the prettiest harbour in the Var, the port is filled with traditional fishing boats bobbing beside rows of pastel-coloured houses and palm-lined promenades.

Despite its popularity as a resort, Sanary remains a working fishing port, with tuna and swordfish still brought in from the Mediterranean. The lively morning market on the Allées d’Estienne-d’Orves is one of the highlights of the town, filling the square with stalls selling fruit, flowers, local food, and Provençal specialties.

Sanary also has a remarkable cultural history. During the 1930s, many German writers and intellectuals fled here from Nazi Germany, including Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht, whose presence is commemorated by plaques around town.

The harbour is watched over by a medieval tower dating from around 1300, once used to defend the port. Nearby stands the Church of Saint-Nazaire, built in the 19th century.

Just east of Sanary, the coastline becomes wilder around Cap Sicié, where the Notre-Dame-du-Mai chapel offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints along this stretch of coast.

👉 Local tip: Visit the harbour early in the morning when fishermen return with their catch and the market begins to fill the square. It’s the best time to see the town at its most authentic.
