Château de Gourdon
HistoricSightseeing
Directions

Perched high above the valley, this is one of those places where the view matters more than what you can actually visit inside. You come here for the setting, not for a classic château tour.

The Château de Gourdon, located in the hilltop village of Gourdon (Alpes-Maritimes), sits at 758 meters above sea level, overlooking the Loup Valley and the Mediterranean coast. Originally built as a fortress in the 9th century and later transformed in the 17th century, it once played a key defensive role thanks to its strategic position.

Today, the château itself is closed to the public, but its terraced gardens and viewpoints remain accessible. The gardens, supported by impressive arcades, act as a natural belvedere with sweeping views stretching toward the coast and the Prealps. On a clear day, you can see far across the Riviera.

The surrounding village of Gourdon adds to the experience, with narrow streets, artisan shops, and a strong medieval feel. It’s one of the most striking perched villages in the region, and the château is at the heart of it.

👉 Local Tip: Skip the middle of the day when tour buses arrive. Come early or late afternoon for quieter views and better light over the valley.
