Often called the Venice of Provence, Martigues sits between Marseille and the Camargue, at the edge of the vast Étang de Berre lagoon. While the surrounding area is known for its industrial landscape, the town itself offers a completely different atmosphere, with canals, pastel houses, and a relaxed coastal rhythm.

Martigues spreads across both sides of the Canal de Caronte and the island of Brescon, where the most picturesque scenes unfold. The highlight is the Miroir aux Oiseaux, a small canal lined with ochre, pink, and blue houses reflected in the water. This spot has inspired painters like Félix Ziem and Corot, and it still attracts artists today.

Beyond the postcard views, Martigues remains a working town with fishing boats, local markets, and a slower pace than the Riviera hotspots. It’s a great stop if you want colorful scenery without the crowds of more famous destinations.
