Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most picturesque coastal towns on the Côte d’Azur, set around a deep natural harbor just east of Nice. Its curved bay, lined with colorful buildings and waterfront cafés, creates one of the most recognizable views in the region.
The old town rises steeply from the port, with narrow lanes, stairways, and covered passages, including the historic Rue Obscure, a vaulted street once used as shelter during attacks and even World War II.
Along the waterfront, the small Chapelle Saint-Pierre stands out, decorated with striking frescoes by Jean Cocteau, adding an artistic touch to the maritime setting. Above the harbor, the Citadelle Saint-Elme houses museums, gardens, and an open-air theatre, offering both history and panoramic views.
Despite its popularity, Villefranche retains a more relaxed feel than nearby Nice, especially away from the waterfront.
👉 Local tip: Walk up into the old town and away from the port. The higher streets are quieter and offer better views over the bay without the crowds.
