Navarinou Park

Directions

Navarinou Park sits in the heart of Exarchia, on what was once a parking lot. In 2009, local residents and activists transformed the space into a self-managed public park. Since then, it has become a symbol of community action and grassroots urban renewal in Athens. The park isn’t manicured like a formal garden, but that’s part of its character: benches, murals, playground equipment, and plenty of shade make it a welcoming stop in an otherwise dense neighborhood.

You’ll often find children playing, locals relaxing with coffee, and community groups hosting events. For visitors, it offers a different perspective on Athens, one that shows how neighborhoods create their own public spaces outside official planning. It’s a relaxed place to pause while exploring Exarchia’s cafés, bookstores, and street art.

👉 If you want to see the park at its liveliest, come on a weekend afternoon when families and neighbors gather. During the week it’s quieter, offering a calm break from Exarchia’s busy streets.
