Grand Étang is the largest natural lake on Réunion and one of the best places to walk when you want something peaceful, green, and close to the highlands. Formed in a collapsed volcanic crater and fed by mountain runoff, the lake sits inland from Saint-Benoît and is surrounded by low cloud forest, vines, and misty cliffs that shift with the light all day long.

There’s no road to the water — you park at a small picnic area and walk-in:

  • 20–30 min walk to the lake on a wide, easy trail

  • From there, you can either loop partway along the lake’s edge or continue deeper to Cascade du Bras d’Annette

  • Flat trail most of the way, but muddy and slick in places — this is rainforest terrain

  • Lots of shade, tree cover, and native birdlife — including papangues and small herons

  • Popular with locals on weekends, but usually quiet midweek

It’s not a swimming spot and there are no facilities beyond the trailhead, but the stillness of the lake and the way the cliffs reflect off the water on a clear morning are reason enough to come. It’s a solid leg-stretcher if you’re based on the East Coast.

👉 Pro Tip: The trail is often wet and slippery. Wear proper hiking shoes and bring a light rain jacket even in the dry season (May-November).
👉 Hidden Gem: The picnic area near the start of the trail is perfect post-hike — bring fruit, cheese, or a boulangerie sandwich for the full island hiking experience.
