Gourdon is one of the most impressive villages perchés in the Alpes-Maritimes, dramatically perched on a cliff high above the Loup Valley. Often considered one of the highest villages in the coastal Alps, it offers extraordinary panoramic views stretching from the mountains all the way to the Mediterranean.

The medieval village is surrounded by remnants of defensive ramparts and filled with narrow streets lined with artisan shops selling regional produce, perfume, and local crafts. The main village square sits at the edge of a steep limestone gorge, creating one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region. From here, you can see across the Loup Valley toward Antibes, Cap Roux, and the Riviera coastline.

Dominating the village is the Château de Gourdon, originally built in the 12th century by the Seigneurs du Bar on the site of an earlier Saracen fortress. The château’s vaulted rooms still reflect this medieval history. In the 17th century, the famous landscape architect André Le Nôtre, designer of the gardens of Versailles, created the château’s elegant terrace gardens.

Today, the château houses several small museums, including the Musée Historique, which displays an Aubusson tapestry, a writing desk said to have belonged to Marie-Antoinette, and a self-portrait attributed to Rembrandt. Nearby, the Musée d’Arts Décoratifs et de la Modernité features decorative art and furniture from the 1930s along with sculptures by Salvador Dalí.

👉 Local tip: Walk to the edge of the village square at sunset. The view down the Loup Valley toward the Mediterranean coast becomes especially dramatic as the evening light fills the gorge.
