Théâtre antique d'Orange

The Théâtre Antique d’Orange is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world and the main highlight of Orange. Built during the reign of Augustus, it remains unique for having its original stage wall still intact, which creates remarkable acoustics even today.

This massive structure once held up to 10,000 spectators, hosting performances ranging from comedy and music to classical theatre. Its imposing outer wall dominates the town, while inside, the scale of the stage and seating gives a real sense of how grand Roman entertainment once was.

The theatre has survived centuries of transformation, used at different times as a fortress, housing, and even a prison, before being restored into the impressive monument you see today. It still hosts major cultural events, including concerts and festivals, making it a rare site that remains both historic and alive.

Don’t miss the statue of Augustus overlooking the stage and the remains of seating sections marked by social rank. For the best perspective, combine your visit with the nearby Colline Saint-Eutrope, which offers a full view of the theatre from above.

👉 Local Tip: You don’t need a ticket for the best overview. Walk up to Colline Saint-Eutrope behind the theatre for a free panoramic view that many visitors miss.
