If you want an easy swim on Frioul without committing to a long hike, this is where most people head first. It’s one of the few places on the islands where comfort and accessibility come together.

Plage de Saint-Estève, located on the northern side of Ratonneau island in the Frioul archipelago near Marseille, is the largest and most accessible beach in the area. It combines sand and pebbles with clear, shallow water, making it especially popular with families and casual swimmers.

Sheltered from the mistral, the sea is often calmer and warmer here than on more exposed parts of the islands. During the summer season, the beach is supervised daily, with a lifeguard station, showers, and toilets available. A snack bar and nearby restaurants at Port Frioul make it one of the few spots on the islands where you don’t need to bring everything with you.

Just above the beach sits the historic Hôpital Caroline, adding context to the area’s past as a quarantine zone. In summer, a marked underwater trail allows visitors to explore marine life with a mask and snorkel, following a series of buoys in shallow water.

Access is simple: take the ferry from Marseille’s Vieux-Port, then walk about 20–30 minutes from Port Frioul.

👉 Local Tip: Come early or later in the afternoon. This is the busiest beach on Frioul, but if you walk a bit along the edges, you can still find quieter spots away from the main crowd.
