Monte Carlo is the most famous district of Monaco, synonymous with glamour, luxury, and the golden age of the French Riviera. Rising above the Mediterranean, this dramatic hillside neighbourhood became the centre of Monaco’s wealth and international reputation.

The district takes its name from Prince Charles III, who opened Monaco’s first casino in 1856 in an attempt to rescue the principality from financial ruin. The gamble paid off spectacularly. The success of the casino allowed Monaco to abolish income taxes in 1883, helping attract wealthy residents and turning the principality into one of the world’s most exclusive destinations.

At the heart of the district stands the magnificent Casino de Monte-Carlo, redesigned in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opéra. The surrounding Place du Casino is framed by grand Belle Époque architecture, luxury hotels, gardens, and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Monte Carlo has long been associated with elite entertainment and high society. It hosts the famous Monte Carlo Rally, the glamorous opera season, and the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, when the streets transform into one of the most challenging racing circuits in the world.

Even without entering the casino, the district remains one of the most impressive places on the Riviera to admire historic architecture, luxury cars, and sweeping coastal views.

👉 Local tip: Visit Place du Casino early in the morning before the crowds arrive. The square is quieter, the luxury cars are often parked outside the casino, and it’s the best time to photograph the iconic Belle Époque buildings.
