Ramatuelle is a beautiful hilltop village on the Saint-Tropez peninsula, surrounded by vineyards and overlooking the Mediterranean. Despite its proximity to the busy resorts of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the village retains a quiet and authentic Provençal atmosphere.

The name Ramatuelle comes from the Arabic “Rahmatu ‘llah,” meaning “God’s gift,” a reminder of the Saracen presence in the region during the early Middle Ages. Part of the old fortifications still survives, including a restored Saracen gate.

Inside this Var village, narrow winding streets, vaulted passages, and stone houses covered with flowers create a picturesque setting. Small squares and terraces open to views across the vineyards and coastline.

Ramatuelle is also known for its cultural life, hosting annual theatre and jazz festivals. The village cemetery contains the grave of Gérard Philipe, one of France’s most celebrated actors of the 1950s.

Just outside the village, the windmills of Paillas offer spectacular views across the peninsula, while nearby Cap Camarat lighthouse marks one of the most scenic points along the coast.

👉 Local tip: Visit the Moulins de Paillas windmills just above the village. The panorama over the Saint-Tropez peninsula, vineyards, and the Mediterranean is one of the best viewpoints in the entire area.
