Known as the gateway to Provence, this town stands in a narrow valley where the Durance river cuts through steep rock formations, creating one of the most striking settings in the region.

Sisteron is built around a massive rocky outcrop crowned by a fortified citadel that dominates the landscape. Originally developed for defense, the site controlled movement between the Alps and Provence, which explains its strategic importance throughout history.

The citadel, expanded over centuries, offers wide views over the valley, surrounding mountains, and the river below. Its walls, towers, and ramparts form one of the most impressive fortifications in Provence. Below, the old town unfolds in narrow alleys known as andrônes, filled with small shops, cafés, and historic buildings.

In the main square, the Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers cathedral showcases Provençal Romanesque architecture, while nearby cultural sites add to the town’s depth. Across the river, the Rocher de la Baume provides another dramatic backdrop and attracts climbers.
