Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world after the Vatican, yet it remains one of the most famous destinations on the French Riviera. This independent principality sits on a narrow stretch of coastline between Nice and the Italian border, where mountains plunge steeply into the Mediterranean.

Although Monaco covers only about 2 square kilometres, it packs an extraordinary concentration of landmarks. Skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and marinas filled with superyachts surround the historic old town of Monaco-Ville, which sits dramatically on Le Rocher (the Rock), a narrow peninsula rising above the Mediterranean Sea.

The principality has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest continuously governed states in Europe. Visitors can explore the Prince’s Palace, wander through narrow streets in the old town, admire the impressive Oceanographic Museum, or watch the changing of the guard in the palace square.

Monaco also became synonymous with glamour during the 20th-century Riviera jet-set era, when celebrities, aristocrats, and wealthy travelers turned it into a symbol of Mediterranean luxury. Today the city-state is known for its Grand Prix, casino culture, luxury yachts, and spectacular coastal scenery.

Despite its glitz, Monaco still reveals traces of its older character, especially in the historic streets of Monaco-Ville and the views across the Riviera from the Rock.

👉 Local tip: Walk around Monaco-Ville early in the morning before cruise visitors arrive. The narrow streets are peaceful, and the viewpoints over the harbour and Mediterranean are far more enjoyable.
