La Chapelle de la Très Ste Trinité et du St Suaire de Nice

Directions

You walk past it without noticing… unless you know what you’re looking for. This chapel hides in plain sight, carrying one of the most unusual religious histories in Nice.

La Chapelle de la Très Sainte Trinité et du Saint Suaire belongs to the Confraternity of the Red Penitents. These religious brotherhoods played a major role in local life for centuries, combining charity, ritual, and strong visual identity. The red robes still define their presence today.

The building you see now is a reconstruction shaped by upheaval. The original chapel dates back to the 17th century, but the French Revolution disrupted everything. The site fell into ruin, the vault collapsed, and the chapel later rose again in the early 19th century with support from King Charles-Félix.

The façade keeps things simple and restrained. Step inside, and the atmosphere shifts. The interior reflects devotion more than grandeur, with artwork tied directly to the identity of the confraternity. The main altar features a representation of the Holy Trinity, while older pieces survived from the original structure, including a 17th-century painting linked to the Holy Shroud.

One detail stands out if you look closely. A polychrome wooden procession group depicts the Miracle of Saint Hospice, a rare subject connected to local history on the nearby coast.

This is not a showpiece church. It’s a living fragment of Nice’s religious culture. Smaller, quieter, and easy to miss, it adds depth to any walk through the Old Town.

👉 Local Tip: Combine this with other Penitents’ chapels in Nice for a themed walk. Each confraternity had its own identity, and spotting the differences turns a simple stroll into a real discovery route.
