Mont Vinaigre
HikeSightseeing
Directions

Mont Vinaigre is the highest point of the Massif de l’Estérel, rising a little over 600 meters above the Mediterranean between Fréjus and Cannes. From its summit, the panorama stretches across the Côte d’Azur, with views that can include Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and the deep blue Mediterranean.

Despite being the tallest peak in the range, Mont Vinaigre is surprisingly accessible. A road leads close to the summit, and from the nearby parking area, the final ascent is a short but rewarding 30-minute walk.

The trail winds through classic Mediterranean maquis vegetation, with juniper, lavender, rosemary, and wild herbs scenting the air. The rugged volcanic landscape of the Estérel creates dramatic contrasts between the red rock mountains and the bright blue sea.

The area also carries a touch of legend. In the 18th century, the mountains were known as a refuge for brigands such as Gaspard de Besse, often described as a Provençal version of Robin Hood.

For travelers exploring the Estérel, Mont Vinaigre offers one of the best viewpoints in the region for relatively little effort.

👉 Local tip: Go early morning or near sunset. The red volcanic rocks of the Estérel glow intensely in soft light and the views toward the coast are much clearer.
