La Turbie

Perched high above Monaco and Monte-Carlo, the village of La Turbie offers some of the most spectacular views on the French Riviera. The village sits along the historic Grande Corniche, the dramatic coastal road that crosses deep ravines and tunnels through the mountains between Nice and Menton.

Often called the Terrace of Monaco, La Turbie overlooks the Mediterranean Sea from a commanding position nearly 500 metres above sea level. Walking through the village reveals a charming historic centre filled with narrow streets, bougainvillea-covered houses, and small squares.

Two medieval gateways still mark the entrance to the old village. Some of the oldest houses, dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, stand along the route of the Roman Via Julia Augusta, an ancient road that once connected Italy with southern France.

The village is also famous for the nearby Trophée d’Auguste, a monumental Roman trophy built in 6 BC to celebrate Emperor Augustus’ victory over Alpine tribes. From the terraces around the monument and the village streets, visitors enjoy sweeping views across Monaco, the coastline, and the Mediterranean.

👉 Local tip: Walk up to the viewpoints near the Trophée d’Auguste at sunset. The light over Monaco and the Riviera coastline is spectacular, and it’s far quieter than the viewpoints down in the city.
