Stone lanes, old fountains, and views stretching toward the Dracénie give this village a calm, elevated feel that suits slow exploration. Heritage, nature, and everyday Provençal life come together here in a way that feels lived-in rather than staged.

Ampus is a village de caractère du Var set at around 600 meters altitude between Draguignan, Tourtour, Châteaudouble, and the road toward the Gorges du Verdon. This perched village stands above the Nartuby d’Ampus gorges, framed by rugged landscapes, forests, and rocky relief. Its setting makes it a great base for travelers who enjoy historic villages, scenic drives, and quieter inland Provence.

The old village rewards a slow walk. You can follow the Chemin de l’Eau, shaped by the historic canal de Fontigon, then continue along the Chemin de Croix for views over the surrounding countryside. Ampus also has a rich heritage, from Saint-Michel church and old chapels to prehistoric remains such as dolmens and the menhir de Mourjaï. Artists, ceramists, and makers have also found inspiration here, which adds another layer to the village’s identity.

👉 Local Tip: Walk the Chemin de l’Eau first, then head back into the center for a drink or meal on a small square. The village feels especially beautiful in the softer light later in the day, when the stone houses glow, and the viewpoints over the Dracénie look their best.
