Perched on a limestone ridge in the Alpilles, Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most dramatic hilltop villages in Provence. Built directly into the rock, this fortified village overlooks sweeping views of the Camargue plains, olive groves, and the Alpilles hills.
At its peak stands the Château des Baux, a vast ruined fortress dating back to the 10th century. Walking through the remains of towers, ramparts, and siege machines gives a real sense of medieval power and isolation. Below, the village unfolds into narrow stone streets lined with historic mansions, small museums, and artisan shops.
Despite its beauty, Les Baux is one of the most visited villages in Provence, attracting large numbers of day-trippers, especially in summer. Nearby, the Carrières de Lumières transforms former stone quarries into immersive digital art exhibitions, adding a unique cultural experience to the visit.
The village is entirely pedestrian, with parking located just outside the entrance, making it easy to explore on foot.
👉 Local Tip: Most visitors arrive late morning and leave by mid-afternoon. Come early or after 5 pm to experience Les Baux with fewer crowds and much better light over the Alpilles.
