Cathédrale Notre-Dame-des-Doms is Avignon’s main cathedral, perched right next to the Palais des Papes and overlooking the Rhône River. Often overlooked by visitors focused on the palace, it’s one of the city’s oldest religious sites, with origins dating back to the 12th century.

The cathedral has been modified over the centuries, with notable 17th-century additions, but it still preserves elements of its earlier history. Inside, you’ll find a 13th-century altar, along with richly decorated chapels and the tombs of two popes.

One of its most recognizable features is the golden statue of the Virgin Mary atop the bell tower, added in the 19th century and visible from across the city.

Despite its location in one of the busiest areas of Avignon, the interior remains quiet and reflective, offering a calm contrast to the crowds outside.
