Directions

You spot it before you reach it, standing slightly apart with a quiet presence above the village. The setting alone makes it worth the walk.

The Chapelle Saint-François-de-Paule, in Bormes-les-Mimosas, dates back to the early 16th century, built after the visit of Saint François de Paule, who sought refuge here during a plague outbreak. According to local tradition, he promised to protect the village, and the chapel was later constructed in his honor.

The building itself reflects a simple Romanesque style, with a long history tied to local religious life, including the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs, who used it for over a century. Inside, you’ll find a 17th-century gilded wooden retable, marble altar, and several historic religious artworks that highlight its importance over time.

What truly sets this spot apart is its position overlooking the surroundings, giving it a strong visual identity that has inspired painters and photographers for generations. The nearby former cemetery and the start of the Chemin des Sages walking route add another layer, combining history, reflection, and slow exploration through the old village.

👉 Local Tip: Combine this stop with a walk along the Chemin des Sages. The plaques and quotes turn a simple stroll into a more reflective experience, especially early morning or late afternoon.
