Église Saint-Sauveur

Directions

In the old center, this church reflects centuries of expansion, adaptation, and local history layered into one building. It’s a stop that reveals how Brignoles evolved over time.

The Église Saint-Sauveur in Brignoles dates back to the 11th century, built as the town outgrew its earlier church, Notre-Dame des Courtines. Due to limited space, the structure developed along a north–south axis, eventually merging with the original building centuries later. Today, it stands as a listed historic monument.

The most striking feature is the Romanesque-inspired portal, restored in the 19th century. Its wooden doors from the 17th century display medallions of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, while the tympanum depicts Christ between two angels. Inside, you’ll find a mix of religious art and historic objects, including a 19th-century organ, liturgical pieces linked to Saint Louis of Anjou, and works reflecting both Christian and earlier Roman influences.

Its connection to the nearby Musée des Comtes de Provence adds context, as several important artifacts from the church are now displayed there.

👉 Local Tip: Stop here briefly before or after visiting the nearby museum. Seeing both places together helps you understand how religious and civic life were closely linked in Brignoles.
