You see it before you reach it. Sitting above the old town, this church watches over Hyères like it always has.

La Collégiale Saint-Paul in Hyères dates back to the 12th century and carries layers of history in its structure. The original Romanesque church still forms the core, later extended with Gothic additions, creating a mix that feels both grounded and vertical at the same time.

The building evolved with the city. Defensive walls once surrounded it, making it part of Hyères’ protection system. Over time, expansions reshaped the layout, adding new sections, a Renaissance-style entrance, and taller openings that bring in more light.

Inside, one of the most striking features is the collection of ex-votos, small painted scenes that capture moments of danger, survival, and gratitude. Each one tells a personal story, turning the church into a quiet archive of local lives rather than just a religious space.

Legends add another layer. Stories still circulate about a Templar treasure hidden beneath the church, tying it into the wider myths of Provence.

👉 Local Tip: Walk around the exterior before going in. The contrast between Romanesque stone and later Gothic additions is much easier to spot from outside than inside.
