The Opéra de Nice is one of the most elegant cultural landmarks in the city, located near the Quai des États-Unis at the edge of Vieux Nice. Originally built in 1855, the theatre quickly became a centre for opera, ballet, and classical music on the French Riviera.

The current building dates largely from 1885, when the opera house was rebuilt after a devastating fire destroyed the original structure. The reconstruction was designed by François Aune, a pupil of the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel.

Inside, the theatre is richly decorated with ornate balconies, frescoes, and traditional opera house details that reflect the elegance of 19th-century Riviera culture. Today, the venue hosts a full programme of opera, ballet, concerts, and classical performances, attracting both locals and visitors.

In recognition of its historical and architectural importance, the Opéra de Nice was officially classified as a Monument Historique in 1993.

👉 Local tip: Even if you are not attending a performance, walk past the building at night when the façade is illuminated. The atmosphere around the opera and nearby streets is especially beautiful after sunset.
