Musée des Comtes de Provence

A former medieval palace turned museum, this is one of the best places to understand the history and culture of inland Provence. The building itself tells as much of a story as the collections inside.

The Musée des Comtes de Provence sits at the highest point of Brignoles, inside a former comtal palace dating back to the 11th century. Expanded in the 13th century, it once served as a fortified residence, administrative center, and even housed key institutions such as the Cour des Comptes of Provence. Over time, it became a town hall, courthouse, and eventually a museum.

Today, the museum focuses on Provençal arts and traditions, with collections covering archaeology, religious art, decorative arts, ethnology, and natural sciences. Highlights include the 3rd-century sarcophagus of La Gayolle, paintings from the Parrocel dynasty, works by Frédéric Montenard, and the unusual reinforced concrete boat by Joseph Lambot, a local innovation ahead of its time.

The setting adds to the experience. Thick stone walls, historic rooms, and elevated views over Brignoles visit feel immersive rather than purely educational.

👉 Local Tip: Ask for the free “sac à jouer” at the entrance if you’re visiting with kids. It turns the museum into an interactive treasure hunt and keeps younger visitors engaged throughout the visit.
