Marseille is the oldest city in France, founded over 2,600 years ago by Greek sailors, and it still feels raw, energetic, and deeply Mediterranean. This is not a polished Riviera resort. It’s a working port city with character, where cultures mix, streets buzz, and the sea shapes everything.

The heart of the city is the Vieux-Port, where fishing boats arrive between Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas. From here, Marseille spreads out into distinct neighborhoods that feel like small villages, from the lively markets of Noailles to the creative streets of Cours Julien.

Walk up to Notre-Dame de la Garde for sweeping views over the city, explore the grand Palais Longchamp, or wander along La Canebière, Marseille’s historic main artery. The city also offers direct access to nature, with the dramatic Calanques National Park just outside the center, where cliffs drop into turquoise water.

Marseille is also about food and atmosphere. This is the birthplace of bouillabaisse, best enjoyed near the port after watching the morning fish market on Quai des Belges. The city’s mix of cultures makes it one of the most exciting places in southern France for local food, street life, and nightlife.

Rough around the edges but full of life, Marseille rewards travelers who are curious, open-minded, and willing to explore beyond first impressions.

👉 Local Tip: Skip the tourist-heavy restaurants around the Vieux-Port for bouillabaisse and head to smaller places in Endoume or Vallon des Auffes. You’ll get a better meal, better atmosphere, and often a better price.
