Brignoles is a historic town in central Var, located between Aix-en-Provence, Toulon, and the Verdon region. Once an important residence of the Counts of Provence, the town developed around a medieval center that still preserves several historic landmarks.

The surrounding countryside is known for its striking red landscapes, created by the region’s rich bauxite deposits, which played a major role in the local economy for decades.

One of the town’s most interesting attractions is the Musée du Pays Brignolais, housed in a 12th-century castle that served as a summer residence for the Counts of Provence. Its diverse collection includes the remarkable La Gayole marble sarcophagus, decorated with both pagan and early Christian symbols, as well as unusual local artifacts such as an early reinforced concrete boat designed by Joseph Lambot, one of the pioneers of modern concrete construction.

Nearby stands the Église Saint-Sauveur, a historic church with a 12th-century portico. Close to the church once stood the palace where Saint Louis of Toulouse, the patron saint of Brignoles, was born in 1274.

Today, Brignoles is a peaceful Provençal town and a convenient stop when visiting central Var and the villages of Haut Var.
