Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is a historic town in the Var countryside, surrounded by hills and vineyards at the foot of the Sainte-Baume mountains. The town is dominated by the impressive Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, one of the most important religious monuments in Provence.

According to tradition, the basilica was built on the burial site of Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint Maximin, the first bishop of Aix. Their relics were said to have been hidden during the Saracen invasions and rediscovered in 1279, leading to the construction of the basilica by Charles II of Anjou, Count of Provence, in the late 13th century.

The basilica is considered the finest example of Gothic architecture in Provence, with soaring stone vaults and monumental proportions. Inside, visitors can see the shrine that holds the relics of Mary Magdalene, making the site an important pilgrimage destination.

Next to the basilica stands the former Dominican monastery, which forms part of the historic complex at the heart of the town.

With its religious heritage, historic streets, and proximity to the Sainte-Baume mountains, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is one of the most significant cultural sites in inland Var.
