You see it long before you reach it. Rising above the old town with its towers and sweeping staircases, this is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the eastern Côte d’Azur.

The Basilique Saint-Michel Archange de Menton, located in the heart of the historic center, is a striking example of baroque architecture influenced by Ligurian design. Built between the 17th and early 19th centuries under the patronage of the Grimaldi family, it dominates the old town from an elevated square that feels suspended between sea and sky.

The approach is part of the experience. Grand stairways lead to a wide pebble mosaic parvis, made with thousands of carefully placed stones forming the Grimaldi coat of arms. From here, the view opens over the rooftops of Menton and the Mediterranean beyond.

Inside, the basilica reveals richly decorated chapels, marble altars, and gilded details typical of the baroque style. The tall campanile, rising over 50 meters, has become a symbol of the city.

This space also comes alive during the famous Menton Music Festival, when the parvis transforms into an open-air concert venue with the sea as a backdrop.

👉 Local Tip: Come early in the morning or late in the evening to enjoy the square without crowds. The light on the pastel buildings and the sea view from the parvis is one of the best photo spots in Menton.
