Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff above the Mediterranean, the Musée Océanographique de Monaco is one of the most famous marine science museums in Europe. Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I of Monaco, a passionate ocean explorer, the museum combines scientific research with spectacular public exhibits.

Inside, visitors can explore aquariums filled with more than 6,000 species of marine life, including tropical fish, coral reefs, and a large shark and coral lagoon. The museum also displays fascinating collections of shells, corals, pearls, and marine specimens, alongside exhibits explaining ocean ecosystems and marine exploration.

For decades, the institution was directed by the legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, whose work helped shape modern marine conservation.

Families visiting during school holidays can also book the Touch Tank experience, where children can gently handle marine creatures such as starfish and even a baby shark under supervision.

The building itself is spectacular, rising from the cliff face above Monaco’s old town. At the top, a large roof terrace offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean coastline and the French Riviera.

👉 Local tip: Take time to visit the rooftop terrace after exploring the aquarium. Many visitors rush through the museum, but the panoramic view from the top is one of the most impressive viewpoints in Monaco.
