Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde is the most iconic landmark in Marseille, visible from almost everywhere in the city. Locals call her La Bonne Mère, The Good Mother, as she watches over Marseille from the highest point at 155 meters above sea level.

Built in the 19th century in a striking neo-Byzantine style, the basilica is crowned by a towering bell tower topped with a gold statue of the Virgin and Child. Inside, the atmosphere shifts. The upper church glows with mosaics, while the crypt, carved into the rock, feels quieter and more intimate.

One of the most unique features is the collection of ex-votos and model ships hanging from the ceiling. These offerings tell stories of survival at sea and personal miracles, reflecting Marseille’s deep connection to the Mediterranean.

Most visitors come for the view, and it delivers. From the terrace, you get a full panorama over the Vieux-Port, Frioul Islands, Calanques, and the city’s rooftops, making it the best viewpoint in Marseille.

You can reach the basilica by bus, tourist train, or on foot if you’re up for a steep climb.

👉 Local Tip: Take bus 60 from the Vieux-Port to avoid the steep uphill walk, then walk back down on foot. The descent offers some of the best photo angles over Marseille, especially late in the day.
