Cité Radieuse (Le Corbusier)

Directions

The Cité Radieuse, designed by Le Corbusier and completed in 1952, is one of Marseille’s most influential architectural landmarks. This seventeen-storey concrete structure, raised on stilts, redefined modern housing and became a model for residential buildings worldwide.

Far from a simple apartment block, the building was conceived as a “vertical city,” with 23 different apartment layouts, internal streets, and shared spaces designed to create a strong sense of community. Many apartments span two levels, with balconies on both sides offering views of both the sea and the surrounding hills.

Inside, you’ll find a functioning residential building where people still live, alongside a hotel and a restaurant. On the rooftop, a sculptural terrace features bold geometric forms and open space, inspired by Le Corbusier’s fascination with ships and movement.

Despite its raw concrete appearance, the building feels surprisingly human and lived-in, making it one of the most fascinating places in Marseille for architecture lovers.

👉 Local Tip: Take the elevator up to the rooftop terrace. Many visitors don’t realize it’s accessible, but it offers one of the most unusual viewpoints in Marseille, especially at sunset.
